The BC Rural Health Network continues to advocate for equitable healthcare access across rural and remote communities in British Columbia.

This month’s newsletter highlights key developments, challenges, and opportunities:
↪ Primary Care Reform ↩
Rural voices are actively shaping provincial discussions through the CARGA review and BC Green Party Committee. The Network’s Implementation Committee is also pushing for reforms that support paramedics working to their full scope and expanding community-based care.
↪ Emergency Room Closures ↩
ER closures remain a serious concern, especially in Northern BC. Communities like Fort Nelson and Tumbler Ridge are experiencing reduced services, prompting urgent calls for smarter, targeted investments in rural healthcare infrastructure.
↪ Mental Health & Equity ↩
Mental health services for adults and seniors in rural areas are critically under-resourced. The Network is working with Foundry and other partners to expand supports. The Executive Director also reflects on Truth and Reconciliation Day, emphasizing the need to address systemic inequities faced by Indigenous peoples.
↪ Community Spotlight: Pender Island Health Care Society ↩
This month’s featured member, PIHCS, operates the only medical facility on Pender Island, serving 80% of residents. Despite strong community support, they face significant funding gaps and advocate for sustainable models tailored to rural realities.
↪ Climate Mental Health Task Force ↩
The CMHA South Cariboo Branch has launched a task force to address the mental health impacts of wildfires and extreme weather. Residents are invited to participate in a regional survey to help shape future supports.
↪ Youth Pathways Program ↩
BC Emergency Health Services is inspiring rural youth to consider careers in paramedicine through hands-on experiences, camps, and ride-alongs. This initiative aims to strengthen emergency services in underserved areas.
