Open Fire Prohibition | Northwest Fire Centre | June 27, 2025 – Sept 29, 2025
What’s changing?
From 12 p.m. (noon) Friday, June 27, 2025, all Category 2 and Category 3 open fires are prohibited throughout the Northwest Fire Centre:
Nadina, Coast Mountain, and Skeena Stikine forest districts
Crown lands in municipal areas (parks, trails, conservation areas)
Village of Hazelton & District of Stewart

What’s banned?
Category 2 & 3 bans include:
Pile burns (varying sizes)
Grass or stubble fires (large areas)
Windrows
Fireworks (per BC Fireworks Act),
Binary exploding targets, burn barrels/cages, controlled air incinerators, air curtain burners, carbonizers
Campfires still allowed
Category 1 campfires (≤ 0.5 × 0.5 m) and gas/propane cooking stoves remain permitted, but must be supervised, equipped with a fireguard, shovel, and at least 8L of water nearby
Enforcement & Penalties
Ticket: $1,150
Admin penalty: up to $10,000
Court conviction: Fines up to $100,000, and/or 1 year jail
Starting a wildfire: Up to $1 million fine, 3 years jail, plus all firefighting costs
Prohibition Duration
Effective noon, June 27, 2025
Ends at noon, September 29, 2025, unless rescinded earlier
To reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires, protect public safety, and manage limited firefighting resources, particularly during prolonged dry conditions
