BC Wildfire - Category 3 Open Fire Ban Expands in Northwest B.C.

Category 3 open fire prohibition planned for parts of the Northwest Fire Centre

Effective Friday, June 6, 2025, at 12:00 noon PDT, Category 3 open fires will be prohibited in the Cassiar Fire Zone and parts of the Skeena Fire Zone, including:

• Old Kalum area (Coast Mountain Forest District)
• Stikine area (Skeena-Stikine Forest District)

This expands on the May 9, 2025 ban already in place for:

• Bulkley and Nadina Fire Zones
• Nadina Forest District
• Skeena portion of the Skeena-Stikine Forest District

These restrictions are in place to help prevent wildfires during dry conditions.

A Category 3 open fire is a fire that burns:

• material concurrently in three or more piles, each not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width,
• material in one or more piles each exceeding 2 metres in height or 3 metres in width,
• one or more windrows each not exceeding 200 metres in length or 15 metres in width, or
• stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 hectares.

In addition to Category 3 open fires, the following activities will also be prohibited:

• air curtain burners; and
• carbonizers.
