BC Healthy Communities is now accepting applications for the 2026 Age‑friendly Communities (AFC) Grants, supporting communities across British Columbia to create places where older adults can live active, connected, and independent lives.
About the Program
The Age‑friendly Communities program is funded by the BC Ministry of Health and delivered by BC Healthy Communities. Since 2007, the program has helped local and Indigenous governments plan for an aging population by removing physical and social barriers and improving community well‑being for people of all ages.
Available Funding Streams
Applicants may apply to one of two funding streams:
Stream 1 - Planning (up to $25,000)
Supports communities to:
- Complete an age‑friendly assessment
- Develop or update an age‑friendly action plan
- Apply an age‑friendly and equity lens to existing policies, plans, or bylaws
Stream 2 - Projects (up to $15,000)
Supports the implementation of actions identified in an age‑friendly assessment and action plan completed within the past 10 years.
All projects must focus on one or more of B.C.’s eight features of an age‑friendly community, such as transportation, housing, social participation, outdoor spaces, and community support services.
Who Can Apply
Eligible applicants include:
- Municipalities
- Regional districts
- First Nations Bands, Tribal Councils, and Self‑Governing First Nations
- Métis Chartered Communities
Applications must include a high‑level budget, workplan, and proof of formal approval (e.g., council or board resolution). Partnerships across sectors are strongly encouraged, and applications from small and rural communities receive priority consideration.
